DSTLD Teams Up with Renegade Street Artist THRASHBIRD for Clothing Collaboration
The LA Artist Adorned DSTLD’s Denim Jackets with Topical Political, Pop Culture Content
Los Angeles, CA -- DSTLD (www.dstld.com), the luxury essentials e-commerce brand, will launch its first-ever shoppable artist collaboration to customers this April with contemporary street artist THRASHBIRD. THRASHBIRD, while his identity remains unknown, is best recognized for his Clone image that marks high profile billboards and sidewalks all over the world, and is among one of the most recognized street artist outlaws around. DSTLD has teamed up with the incognito creative activist on a capsule collection of men’s and women’s denim jackets as well as t-shirts printed with THRASHBIRD’s iconic works, which touch upon a variety of pop culture and political references.
The collaboration comes at a notable time when products expressing politics have become a powerful, fashionable way to communicate our positions. “DSTLD was founded with the creative class in mind - individuals who appreciate quality and minimalism, and are more concerned about expressing themselves through creative work than labels,” says DSTLD co-founder and co-CEO Corey Epstein. The juxtaposition of THRASHBIRD’s point of view - which often surfaces on advertisements and signage for Hollywood movies, major fashion brands, banks, and buildings - and working with a fashion brand, is the point. “DSTLD is about supporting the creative endeavors of people. Our clothing presents the perfect blank canvas to do just that.”
Accordingly, DSTLD’s signature unembellished look, simple color palate, and clean designs proved the perfect canvas for THRASHBIRD’s compelling contemporary voice - a unique blend of humor and subversion that speaks on issues of race, gender, equality, and politics that plague our society.
“In a twist of irony, I nearly made a DSTLD billboard my canvas, just before this collaboration came about. Learning about DSTLD’s creative underpinnings and commitment toward reducing fashion’s impact on the world through fewer, better things struck a chord with me,” remarked THRASHBIRD. “I wear jeans and a t-shirt in my everyday life, and it all has paint on it anyway. I saw this as a unique opportunity to expand my voice and my medium.”
