The Couturier

I don't like dreams or reality. I like when dreams become reality because that is my life.

~ Jean Paul Gaultier

In 2018 Popovy Sisters commissioned two exclusive hyper real OOAK dolls with the elements of real gold for famous French haute couture and prêt-à-porter fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier. With a designer collaboration, the Popovys are gearing up for world domination.

The sisters are fashion designers and doll-makers with a strong sense of the contemporary and an eye for trendsetting. Without the constraints of a real model the fashion can push further than wearables. The focus, though, is on the doll’s form. The faces are often inspired by children, expressive and emotional, emphasizing the atypical such as large ears or teeth gaps. The imperfections make them seem almost human.

Exclusive fine-art photography of Gaultier doll by Popovy Sisters was released in February 2017. The prints are produced by the highest quality materials and in small editions they are highly coveted and sought after. These photographs convey the overt style and femininity of each doll made by the Popovy Sisters.

These particular diptychs of photographs capture the most iconic dolls, including the commission by Jean-Paul Gaultier, Jeannette I + II. Coinciding with NY Fashion Week, these photographs pay homage to haute couture and fashion photography, mimicking the dramaticism of Richard Avedon and Helmut Newton’s portrait photography.
